Parenting: How to Learn Parenting Skills – as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. Hi, I am Gila Brown and I am a Child Development Specialist and Parent Coach. All parents are wonderful. We all do the best we can with what we have and what we don’t, but a child’s behavior is different. Kids behave differently than grown ups do, and when we understand why they behave the way they do, we can respond differently and more effectively. You can learn that from experience with working with kids, you can read books. There are certainly plenty of parenting books out there and there are also parent coaches available. I don’t see parents making mistakes so much as perhaps creating opportunities for growth, and in some of those opportunities for growth recognizing when they are creating a struggle that does not need to be there. When they are focusing on behaviors at the expense of the feelings that are causing those behaviors, is another one. Focusing or moving out of a place of fear and guilt, you know, things should be a certain way or I am going to mess up my kid for life if I say this or do this, rather then really trusting their instincts. I would say those are sort of the big ones.
